"The guitar playing is very hot ...& emotional"

This album is very "moving" ...emotional and tense, with a special "soundtrack" touch to it. On the other side of the coin "Porcelain Rose" is very spanishy, relaxed, uplifting and joyful. The guitar playing is very hot, mixing good feel with good note choice resulting in strong memorable melodies. It is a very modern sounding album but not straying from the flamenco guitar sound... the best of the modern world with the fiery and organic sound of the good ol' nylon guitar.

Smooth Flamenco Majesty!

Al Marconi's 2007 Terra Nova release must surely rate as one of the finest spanish guitar instrumental albums of all time and a real accomplishment to a relatively unheard of artist sure to be making great waves within the smooth flamenco genre in the very near future. A sublime collection of self-penned and original compositions, diverse yet consistent, mature in arrangement and lyrical in statement. Though his technical ability seems to know no boundaries, never does his skill and command of his instrument overshadow the lyrical and melodious nature of the song writing. A strong world element with a penchant for all things eastern fuses well with a more contemporary nuevo flamenco vibe with every minute bringing forth coloration and a new twist in the tale. The eleven compositions on offer meander their way through so many emotions from the tranquil and serene beauty of Porcelain Rose to the majestic and powerful Mirage. A powerful production and a rich and exciting sonic palette entice the listener to sit back and be transported to other worlds both near and afar. Terra Nova is an epic journey and a near flawless album that is undoubtedly a landmark release within the instrumental guitar world and a testimony to its composer and with this effort under his belt the future looks rosy for Al Marconi.

Perfect for those balmy summer evenings

This is Al's most recent album and finds him in a slightly different musical territory to his previous releases. The Hispanic flavour of past works is still evident but now there are richer compositions and harmonies along with a liberal sprinkling of infectious hooks - definitely a good example of the Nuevo Flamenco genre popularised by the likes of Jesse Cook and Ottmar Liebert. It's not just a guitarist's album either, although the guitar is always evident; many other instruments play their part (such as the duduk on Mirage - think 'Gladiator'). Of course, the guitar playing is as delightful and accomplished as always. Many modern albums suffer from a lack of dynamics due to massive amount of compression, so it's great to find an album with plenty of dynamic range and one that really captures the beauty and subtleties of the Spanish guitar. Terra Nova really is a veritable feast for the ears. Everyone should own a copy; great for home hi-fi or in-car listening. I can't recommend it highly enough. Superb!
