The REAL Folk-Blues

This album consists of the two albums J.B. Lenoir recorded in the mid-60s (Alabama Blues and Down In Mississippi) and are a world away from his 1950's work. Unlike the electric boogie of his J.O.B,, Parrot & Chess sides these are almost solo acoustic performances consisting of J.B.'s guitar, what sound like bongos and Willie Dixon on backing vocals.

Supposedly, J.B. heard Bob Dylan and was inspired to write Mississippi Road and that gives an indication of what to expect. Detailing the civil-rights struggle (Alabama Blues, Shot On Meredith), the Vietnam War (Vietnam-an updating of his I'm In Korea) these are blues and an album unlike any attempted before in the blues (and sadly seldom since).

Reading this, you could be forgiven for thinking that this is a solemn (i.e. preachy) album, however this is not The Times They Are A-Changin' Volume Two. Mixed in with the protest blues are re-recorded versions of his earlier hits (The Mojo Boogie, Mama, Talk To Your Daughter, Tax-Payin' Blues) and songs that can only have been written by J.B. (Good Advice, The Whale Has Swallowed Me) and show what a loss his untimely death at the age of 38 was.

Their are versions of these songs available on other CDs (well worth having) but they are mostly live versions recorded during the American-Blues Festival Tour of Europe, these are the only available studio versions on CD that I can find on iTunes, therefore buy it-you won't regret it.

Newcomers to his considerable legacy could be forgiven for questioning J.B. Lenoir's gender upon first hearing his rocking waxings. Lenoir's exceptionally high-pitched vocal range is a fooler, but it only adds to the singular appeal of his music. His politically charged "Eisenhower Blues" allegedly caused all sorts of nasty repercussions upon its 1954 emergence on Al Benson's Parrot logo (it was quickly pulled off the shelves and replaced with Lenoir's less controversially titled "Tax Paying Blues")....
