Quality Dire

Now, although i'm only 19years old, i am old enough to remember "Dire Straits". I was brought up on them, and they are one of those bands that has a distinctive, and probably one of musics most uniques sounds, Mark Knopflers guitar. It is a truley distinctive sound. This album has combined what i think is "most" of Dire Strates best songs, but it has also missed out such great songs such as "Espresso love" and "Why Worry". A great album, by one of Rocks greats. Not only can knopfler write truley inspiring lyrics, but he also writes smooth melodic tunes, blending guitar solos with piano solos (Tunnel of Love). He is one of lifes most influencial musicians. Sultans of Music

Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler may not be cool in the NME, but believe me it is some of the best music ever produced. Knopfler's Magical guitar playing, subtle but thunderous coupled with emotionally charged lyrics, makes dire straits/Mark Knopfler a unique combination of substance over style. Songs like Telegraph Road are a journey through a musical tour de force and Knopfler's solo material like Sailing To Philadelphia, is simply an outstanding piece of writing in any form. The complete history in this album will get you hooked forever - it is definately money for something!

probably the best ..... in the world

This is one of those albums that should be a compulsory purchase. It's so good they should have it on the national curriculum! If you want to hear guitar playing that'd make Hendrix and Clapton proud then this is the one for you.

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s

Dire Straits emerged during the post-punk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. If anything, the band was a direct outgrowth of the roots revivalism of pub rock, but where pub rock celebrated good times, Dire Straits were melancholy. Led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler, the group built their sound upon the laid-back blues-rock of J.J. Cale, but they also had jazz and country inflections, occasionally dipping into the epic song...
