Tantalising masterpiece

'Tolkingarna' is an EP of interpretations (not cover's) that Laleh performed on the Swedish TV show 'Så Mycket Battre' ('So Much Better'). She emerged as the star of the season, with many of these tracks entering the Swedish charts - 'Änglen i rummet' in particular became a massive success and reached the top ten. The EP was released just a few months before her fourth studio album 'Sjung' in Sweden, and indeed it provides an entrance route to that album. The EP is a departure from Laleh's sound, in that it actually has a comprehensive sound, unlike her endearing but genre-hopping self-titled debut and follow-up 'Princessor'. Incorporating synth's into her music for the first time, Laleh achieves a delicate balance between delicate singer-songwriter and indie pop heaven.

'Just nu', a cover of Thomas Ledin's 80s Eurovision joly, sees Laleh turn it into a psychedelic folk track with overwhelming guitar riffs and elevating vocals thrown into the mix. Elsewhere, 'Fred (Till Melanie)' is washed up in synths but re-imagines the original as a pulsating video-arcade jam. 'Tolkingarna' is probably the most impressive release in Laleh's catalogue, a big statement when you realise that she released her first album when just 22 after convincing Warner Music that she could also produce it entirely by herself and create her own label imprint (Lost Army) to release it on. Yet, Tolkingarna allows you to go back to the raw material she's working from (the original's) and the process she goes through to make them her's. Indeed after a few spins you forget that these are even interpretations.

Laleh Pourkarim, better known as Laleh, burst onto the Swedish pop charts in 2005 with a sophisticated set of songs that nodded to smooth adult contemporary artists like Sting and Seal. The daughter of a well-regarded Iranian sociologist, Laleh spent the majority of her childhood in Iran and moved to Sweden when she was 12, where she learned to play the guitar. She formed a jazz ensemble, Bejola, with her music teacher when she was a teenager, and went on to teach herself to play percussion and saxophone....
