EDITORS’ NOTES

Riccardo Muti returns to conduct the Wiener Philharmoniker’s New Year’s Day Concert for the fifth occasion in a time-honored programme of waltzes, polkas, and marches by Johann Strauss I and II, plus music by von Suppé and the little-known Austro-Hungarian composer Alfons Czibulka. It’s Strauss most of the way though, with pieces including the Thunder and Lightning Polka (“Unter Donner und Blitz”), Blue Danube Waltz (“An der schönen blauen Donau”), Radetzky March (“Radetzky-Marsch”) played with wit and gusto—all lapped up by the high-spirited Viennese audience.
