Album Review

The quartet gives stirring, enthusiastic renditions of then-contemporary songs by Joni Mitchell,Gordon Lightfoot, Ian Tyson, Leonard Cohen, et al., all resplendent in beautiful harmonies and full-bodied leads. Don't be fooled by the stage shot on the cover, however — this is a studio recording, though it's certainly not lacking in bold immediacy and energy. Those with strong emotional ties to Canada, or a special interest in '60s folk music, or who simply appreciate the brand of three- and four-voice folk performances of the Weavers or — perhaps more on target — the Seekers will probably love this CD, and no one with any inclinations in those directions will resent any part of it.

The Travellers were formed in 1952 by Sid Dolgay (mando-cello), Jerry Gray (banjo, singer) and vocalists Jerry Goodis, Oscar Ross and Helen Gray. The folk band's cover of "This Land Is Your Land" in 1955 granted them fame in their native Canada. Across Canada with the Travellers was their first album; over ten albums followed, including The Travellers Sing Songs of North America (1959), Quilting Bee (1960), Introducing the Travellers (1961), The Travellers on Tour (1962), Something to Sing About...
