iTunes Editors' Notes

On Back to Black, her second album and U.S. debut, singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse defines her own tradition. With a deeply personal touch, she commands settings that meld torchy doo-wop era ballads, soul and girl-group slammers, and current hip-hop winners. Winehouse, already famous in her native England for reckless, tipsy behavior, topped the charts there with “Rehab,” a construction that wraps her protests that Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway are more help than a clinic could be in a forthright tribute to early-’60s radio that does the Ronettes and the Drifters proud. Despite the buzz from that instant anthem, Back to Black doesn’t shy from the heartbroken — and not just in the “Me and Mr. Jones”’ complaint that she missed a Slick Rick show. The title track brings the real pain, one more in an album of performances that certify the 23-year-old Winehouse as an undeniable master.

Customer Reviews

She is back and hopefully now will get the recognition she deserves. This album is a fantastic soul album taking the best sounds of mowtown and 60's soul girl group's. The best tracks are "Me and Mr Jones", "Back to Black", "Love is a Losing Game","Rehab", "Tears Dry on Their Own" and "Addicted". As before Amy focuses on the pain of love, but with a modern twist....her lyrics paint vivid and often funny stories...."Me and Mr Jones" is about her boyfriend messing up her chance to see a Nas gig...LOL! This is a fantastic album that should be bought by any person who loves good soul music.

BUY THE CD AND RIP IT - terrible audio quality

The title says it all - this is an album where AAC coding at 128kbit/s just doesn't work. The download you buy sounds buzzy, muddy and sometimes just doesn't represent the music at all - that is to say, bits go missing entirely. The album deserves better than this so if you're considering it, listen to the clips here and then buy the CD cheap online and rip it at the highest quality settings you can. Apple really shouldn't be selling this at this quality.

I didn't think i like this as much as I do

If you are unsure about buying this, do not hesitate! Imagine you are in are in the coolest jazz club in san fransisco and the girl you want to hate comes on and blows your mind. Pour yourself a glass of JD light up a ciggie and soak it up. I thought I'd hate this and I love it.

Much can be said about the late Amy Winehouse, one of the U.K.'s flagship vocalists during the 2000s. The British press and tabloids seemed to focus on her rowdy behavior, heavy consumption of alcohol, and tragic end, but fans and critics alike embraced her rugged charm, brash sense of humor, and distinctively soulful and jazzy vocals. Her platinum-selling breakthrough album, Frank (2003), elicited comparisons ranging from Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan to Macy Gray and Lauryn Hill. Interestingly...
