Top twang and country folk....

You should check this out, a really well balanced country folk album full of variety and subtle nuances. The Hi and Lo's Paul and Nick are a veritable two man Americana orchestra trading banjo, acoustic guitar, mandolin, drums, harmonica and that trademark telecatser twang as well as their excellent harmonies.

The lyrics are often amusing and knowing raher than cliched which is a breath of fresh air for contemporary country/folk bands.

The album was a gift, however...

Find me someone who says this isn't good honest music with heart and a spit bucket full of soul, and I'll tell them they're wrong.

I've seen the Hi & Lo live a number of times, and they're superb - Paul McClure and Nick Bott are multi instrumentalists, and they share song writing and vocal duties.
On this album they've stayed close to their live sound, resisting the temptation to add layers of overdubs to the duo format. This approach allows the songs to speak for themselves, and these songs really do stand up. Some familiar themes of joy and heartbreak, but they always sound fresh - there's plenty of irony and pathos in there too. And the singing is wonderful - not many people can deliver songs with this depth of emotion. Fragile Work of Art and Yesterdays Lies are my favourites, but the whole album is excellent. If you're into 'Americana' (for want of a better term) or just good songs well played, you have to hear this!
