iTunes Editors' Notes

One of the most streetwise performers of the '90s neo-soul explosion, Erykah Badu made an untouchable classic with her debut, Baduizm. Deeply idiosyncratic in both vocal style and writing, Badu rarely if ever went for the clichŽd moment. At the same time, the album's tight grooves and layered, jazzy sound allowed it to fit into many different listening situations, from nighttime romance to daytime street games, quiet restaurants to raucous kids' hangouts. Badu obviously revered the '70s classics that fed her music, while holding true to the hip-hop jones she'd obviously been raised with. Her lyrics even more personal than those of her peers, she rocked the mic with wisdom that also left room for a glimpse of vulnerability. While never quite as popular as this again, Badu remains a completely remarkable artist.

One off

Hip hop and r&b aren't my scene in the least, but Eryka Badu's voice, her intelligent, witty lyrics and songwriting skills make her one of the best talents to come out of the US in the past ten years. Plus this album goes down great with a cold beer.

She grew up listening to '70s soul and '80s hip-hop, but Erykah Badu drew more comparisons to Billie Holiday upon her breakout in 1997, after the release of her first album, Baduizm. The grooves and production on the album are bass-heavy R&B, but Badu's languorous, occasionally tortured vocals and delicate phrasing immediately removed her from the legion of cookie-cutter female R&B singers. A singer/songwriter responsible for all but...
