Album Review

The Hank Dogs are one of the most intriguing roots-based groups performing in the U.K. today. Effortlessly fusing folk and country elements with what can only be described as a hardened grace, this, their debut record, succeeds on many levels. One of the most striking things about this record is the veritable gene-spliced brother/sisterhood that engulfs virtually all of the cuts. This is primarily due to the group members themselves. Featuring guitarist/singers Andy Allen and his ex-wife Piano Pace, and rounded out by Lily Ramona — who is Andy's daughter from another marriage (are you following this?) — on drums and vocals, the harmony singing on this record is positively staggering. In fact, these are probably some of the finest vocal performances in this idiom during the '90s. The songwriting is also spectacular. Dark and soulful at the same time, Bareback is one of the greatest folk debuts of 1999. The scary thing is that they just may get better.

Sublime time

The ignorant press of the nineties dismissed this group as a bunch of hippies and the Hank dogs revel in their obscurity as I do in this album. This is one of the best alternative folk albums of the nineties (1998 to be precise on Hannibal not 1999 as itunes lists). This record has amazing mesmeric songs with heavenly close harmonies and excellent instrumentation. The gentle songs are beguiling and often disguise lyrics such as "i'll take the greatest of pleasure in watching them tear you limb from limb". If you happen to stumble across this page don't leave before purchasing this CD you won't regret it.

Great

Hank Dogs are an inspiration and I cannot agree more with the other reviewer. Complex lyrics and fabulous harmonies, and songs that linger. Treat yourself. Their second album, "Half Smile" is also excellent.

Amazing

Had this album since it came out! One of my top 5 albums ever!

The folk stylings of the Hank Dogs came together in 1992 with singer/songwriter Andy Allen, arranger Piano, and their daughter Lily Ramona. The made their debut at the Easycome Acoustic Club in South London, and producer Jon Kertzer took notice. He'd been in London for a while but returned to his native Seattle to work with the Bumbershoot Festival in 1998. He brought the Hank Dogs with him and prepped the group for their rootsy debut, Bareback. The album was a critical success; the band received...
