South African-born composer Mark Kilian, who moved to the U.S. to do graduate work in film and TV scoring at USC, has built up a reputation for being able to mix traditional movie soundtrack music with elements of world music, as he did in his music for Rendition. In director Santosh Sivan's Before the Rains, set in India in the 1930s, he employs elements of traditional Indian music, using, for instance, percussionist Sivamani, along with orchestral scoring. A thoughtful drama presented by Merchant Ivory, the film requires subtle background music to tell its story about the interactions between the British and the Indians during the period of colonialism, and Kilian's music, employing wordless vocals and sometimes ambient sounds, provides what is needed.
Not normally my thing but for some reason i found it very uplifting.
