iTunes Review

Ever since his 2000 debut album Aijuswanaseing, Philly singer Musiq Soulchild has been one of the preeminent voices in the neo-soul movement, scoring many hit singles, selling millions of units, and racking up a slew of awards from BET, ASCAP, and Soul Train, among others. Musiqinthemagiq is his sixth album, and first release since 2008's On My Radio. On it, he continues his signature style of throwback R&B vocalism, understated production, and completely ignoring the use of spaces between words on song titles. With only one guest spot (Swizz Beatz on "Anything"), he is free to do his own thing on every track, and is especially impressive on joints like "Sayido," "Backtowhere," the extra retro "Lovecontract," and "Dowehaveto." The subject matter is pretty much exclusively about love, sensuality, and romance, and his fans wouldn't have it any other way.

Up to his usual standard

A truly under rated artist in the UK. 6 Albums later and he hasn't once failed to live up to his spectacular standard.

There is another artist out there calling themselves by the surname 'Legend' and I am yet to be convinced. Mr Soulchild on the other hand sings, composes and lives up to his moniker with album after album of beautiful, lyrical, funky musiq. To say I am a fan is an under estimation of my admiration.

Back to his best

The modern day Stevie Wonder returns.

No "Girlfriend" but still brilliant.

Good, but not excellent...

The album starts off great, single' and 'sayido' are typical Musiq tracks, nice beat with smooth, layered vocals. 'lovecontract' is a great track too, upbeat and catchy. However, after track 7 things dwindle off to mediocrity which is an unexpected disappoinment from Musiq.

Definately an underated artist, but this isn't his best. 4 stars as the first half is the start of a great album..

Definately worth the purchase, but not from iTunes! Buy the CD. Keep the solid disc alive!

Born: 16 September 1977 in Philadelphia, PA

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Musiq Soulchild was among a crop of R&B artists who arrived during the 2000s with no debt to the flashy and sexually aggressive sounds that prevailed throughout the preceding decade. The Philadelphian, born Taalib Johnson, grew up in a household that provided him with an education in '70s soul. Additionally inspired by the contemporary likes of D'Angelo and Lauryn Hill, he applied his musical upbringing to a love for noncommercial hip-hop and refined his romantic and affable everyman style across...
