Blackstar by David Bowie on iTunes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Released on his 69th birthday, Blackstar is a bold final chapter to David Bowie’s chameleonic studio career. He digs deep into experimentation, playing frontman to Donny McCaslin’s NYC-based jazz combo for a thrillingly live-sounding 25th album. The band is impeccable, equally adept at playing tightly wound post-rock on "Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)” as they are the skronky free-jazz runs that underpin Bowie’s forcefully breathy tone on "'Tis a Pity She Was a Whore”. Bowie is absolutely haunting on the beautifully odd 10-minute title track as he swings between theatrical and spacey, heavenly and menacing, swaggering and soulful.

Loving the Alien

bozzers,

Love this. Love it love it love it. What other artist, at almost 70, is still this creative? After 6 decades of making music, Bowie releases something so original, so innovative and fascinating. Along with a beautiful and eerie video to accompany it.

'Blackstar' is a masterpiece- I'm looking forward to the new LP released on 8 January 2016: his 70th birthday.

David Bowie remains a true genius.

About David Bowie

Everyone has a David Bowie that they fell in love with first—the otherworldly outsider Ziggy Stardust, the electronic adventurer, the wild-eyed glam pioneer, the enigmatic storyteller. But it was Bowie's ability to reinvent himself so vividly that captivated us again and again. Driven by boundless imagination, David Bowie was a multifaceted music icon, a social provocateur, a force in fashion, and a gifted actor whose unique personas and perspectives traveled with him through the decades. From the moment his homesick astronaut captured the spotlight in the late ‘60s to his exploratory, jazz-influenced Blackstar almost 50 years later, he excelled and innovated with turns in pop, glam, punk, soul, hard rock, and electronic music. And even though Bowie released vital albums throughout his life—and will forever embody the most artful edge of rock ’n’ roll—he was more than just the music he made. Bowie's fearlessness inspired us to celebrate the complexity and beauty of being completely ourselves.
