It's great to start with, but just gets better with each listen.

Those expecting a Dire Straits album, don't. If you expect a Money for Nothing type track, stop. If you long for a 6 minute Sultans of Swing live version guitar solo from days gone by, you won't get one. If however you're a Dire Straits / Mark Knopfler fan that's ageing as well as Mark's songwriting is, then you'll love it. If you've always appreciated the subtleties of Mark's songwriting, his keen ear for melody, his perfection in the pursuit of recording quality and his ability to write story-telling songs about almost any subject, you'll be right at home with this purchase.

As you'd expect, there are some excellent guitar solos, there are some fantastic stories, the quality of recording across the album and each genre it contains is faultless; it hasn't been produced for today's radio culture of compressing the hell out of everything to make your album the loudest.

It's a genuinely excellent collection of songs ranging from his traditional Celtic inspired folk rock, to some decent foot shuffling blues via a few superb heartfelt ballads.

The standout tracks for me are Miss You Blues, Haul Away, Corned Beef City, Radio City Serenade and Dream of the Drowned Submariner. With each listen though, something else will jump out at me I hadn't noticed before.

Simply put, if you're looking to listen to some perfectly recorded, superbly crafted and beautifully played songs that cover a decent range of genres, subjects and musical divides all held together with the genius songwriting that only a few can provide - you won't be disappointed.

Better and Better !

This is just a great album , I think the best Mark has produced in a while and I love the others too . Just a great number of tracks , exceptionally well written and so much fun in the lyrics. Its a true delight .

The more you listen the more you love it , The beauty of songs like Haul away , The bumping rolling fun of corned beef city and the fun of privateering And the funky , I used to could Are just great examples .

The musicianship on this album is awesome , What a bunch of guys to support the man himself they come together and produce a true work of art .

I went to see them in Brighton and if you get the chance to catch the tour please do ! you will love it .

Buy this album you will not be dissapointed , This guy just gets better and better , Keep writing and playing Mark , Cant wait for the next tour !!!.

Exactly as expected

I knew it was gonna be a bit boring, nothing to do with Dire Straits, but i highly respect any person who loves what he does. I used to be crazy for Mark and his music many years ago, now I just enjoy his old albums and my memory of him. It terms of Privateering - Haul Away is the only song I fon't feel sorry for paying for the whole album. But that's just imho

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

The most celebrated British guitar hero to emerge in the 1970s and '80s, Mark Knopfler rose to fame as the leader of Dire Straits, and his songwriting and incisive guitar work played a decisive role in making them an international success story. At a time when punk and new wave were making technique for its own sake seem irrelevant, and metal was taking the guitar solo in noisier and unpredictable directions, Knopfler's clean but dexterous picking proved there was still room for traditionalism and...
