Album Review

During 1946-1947, singer Mildred Bailey recorded four sessions for the Majestic label; these later sides were among her finest recordings. This Savoy LP reissues most of the music from these sessions, including several previously unreleased alternate takes. In fact, of the five songs left out, three are heard in previously unreleased alternate versions. Bailey is featured with Ted Dale's orchestra (with arrangements by Eddie Sauter), a septet with pianist Ellis Larkins and trumpeter Irving "Mouse" Randolph, Julian Work's string orchestra, and (best of all) the Ellis Larkins Trio. Among the more memorable selections are "I'll Close My Eyes," "Lover Come Back to Me," "You Started Something," and "Almost Like Being in Love." Hopefully, this delightful music will eventually be reissued (with all of the performances) on CD.
