Buffalo Springfield’s second album is a consummate showcase—not just for singles, but also for quality songwriting styles. Boasting distinct voices in Richie Furay, Stephen Stills and Neil Young, the L.A. band was a triple threat. They take turns offering mellow country-rock (“A Child’s Claim To Fame”), R&B-tinged acid rock (“Mr. Soul”) and down-home soul (“Hung Upside Down”). While “Rock & Roll Woman” and “Bluebird” epitomise the era’s best flag-flying rock ’n’ roll, Young pushes further out with the sonic narratives of “Expecting to Fly” and “Broken Arrow”.
