The first of two generous (20-selection) British LPs that feature singer Annette Hanshaw at the peak of her powers, this release would be essential if it were in print. Hanshaw ranked with Ethel Waters and Connie Boswell as the finest female jazz singers of the time, even though she is continually overlooked today. Backed by a variety of top jazz players (including pianist James P. Johnson, clarinetist Benny Goodman, violinist Joe Venuti, the Dorsey Brothers, and trumpeter Phil Napoleon), the singer performs definitive versions of such songs as "My Blackbirds Are Bluebirds Now," "You're the Cream In My Coffee," "A Precious Little Thing Called Love," "Mean to Me," "I Get the Blues When It Rains" and "Daddy, Won't You Please Come Home." Unlike most other singers of the era, Annette Hanshaw's vocals are as listenable and undated as those of her illustrious sidemen.
