Album Review

Originally recorded in 1984 and not released until 1988, Miss America still sounds light years ahead of its time: Mary Margaret O'Hara is a force of nature, a remarkable singer and composer whose crystal-clear soprano acrobatics and hypnotic songs defy accepted conventions. Flirting intermittently with country ("Anew Day," "Dear Darling") and jazz ("Keeping You in Mind"), O'Hara works primarily with pop dynamics, but deconstructs and reassembles the form according to her own blueprint: "Year in Song" is jaggedly intense, "To Cry About" is gorgeously ambient, and "Body's in Trouble" is delicately gripping, yet none conform easily to such facile assessments, with hairpin turns in mood and atmosphere which blindside expectations. Following instead its own abstract internal logic, Miss America is a work of mad-scientist genius, and it remains a singular experience.

Miss America

I've been waiting for years for this to be released. My old vinyl copy gave up ages ago. Some beautiful tracks, mostly on first half of the album. Incredible!!

I had this on an ancient review cassette I was sent in the 80s - I am SO GLAD to find it again. A fabulous, fabulous album and soundtrack to a period of my life. Listen and love.

Nobody has ever sounded like this before ,or since ,for an album to be truly great , it has to be unique ,not a head of its time ,but from another dimension completely .

This is possibly the greatest album and performer, nobody has ever heard of ,and quite simply one of the finest musical performances ever recorded .

She left the band in 1983, but not before recording the demos which subsequently...
