The score is OK, but Hooper was not the man for the job

It would be unfair to expect Hooper to match the brilliance of John Williams in his scoring of the Harry Potter franchise. However, one expects the creators of the film to hire a composer who could bring their own style and ideas to the fresh new film, yet retain some of thematic material already laid down by Williams in the first 3 films. Sadly, Hooper fails to meet either of those expectations. John Williams' "Hedwig's theme", iconic of the Harry Potter films is no longer evident in the scoring. It is sadly replaced by simple, weak, undeveloped "background music" by Hooper, which fails miserably to represent the deep, sophisticated emotion of the storyline. What's even more sad is there is an obvious similarity between the theme "Living Death" from this film, and "Professor Umbridge" theme from the previous film. The composer has ran out of ideas by his second film! The soundtrack is fine if you are not familiar with the music of the other Harry Potter films. However as I have vividly followed the scoring of the films since the "Philosopher's Stone" , all I felf was utter disappointment.

This music is BRILLIANT! I must say it was well worth the money. It brings all the right emotions to mind especially when listening to Dumbledores Farewell, I wanted to cry just listening to it. Praise to Nicholas Hooper!

adequate in a purely atmospheric sense.

With the first four films, you could easily pull several cues from their soundtracks and be presented with a solid, well crafted and engaging symphonic experience - well developed themes, great orchestration and enough character to survive on any score compilation album. This sadly isn't the case with the latest two offerings, the music is somewhat restrained, almost afraid to comment on anything beyond what is immediately happening at that moment on screen. What we get is an album of meandering underscore that serves the film fairly well but fails to evoke any of the previous Potter magic.
