Album Review

Sometimes memories distort or inflate the quality of recordings deemed legendary, but in the case of Dusty in Memphis, the years have only strengthened its reputation. The idea of taking England's reigning female soul queen to the home of the music she had mastered was an inspired one. The Jerry Wexler/Tom Dowd/Arif Mardin production and engineering team picked mostly perfect songs, and those that weren't so great were salvaged by Springfield's marvelous delivery and technique. This set has definitive numbers in "So Much Love," "Son of a Preacher Man," "Breakfast in Bed," "Just One Smile," "I Don't Want to Hear About It Anymore," and "Just a Little Lovin'," and offers exquisite mastering, informative notes, and an unreleased version of "What Do You Do When Love Dies." It's truly a disc deserving of its classic status. [Eight of the 11 original tracks are repeated at the end of the U.K. edition in their original mono form.] ~ Ron Wynn & Richie Unterberger, Rovi

What the....?

...must have been the response of the people that bought "Son of a Preacher Man" not realising that they were listening to a White Soul artist that could hold their own with the best of them....and she became the best of them with this classic album....with Atlantics Records finest taking care of business on the production and writing duties...all you have to consider is the quality of THAT voice ....and the fact makes your spine tingle and her backing vocalists work for their pay to keep up.

Blue eyed soul

This is Dusty at her best; tracks like "I don't want to hear it anymore" and "no easy way down" showcase her unique voice, this is blue eyed soul. Take a chance you will not be disappointed.

Top Ten ?

Are there better albums than this? Probably .. but I'd struggle to name more than 10. She soars.

Britain's greatest pop diva, Dusty Springfield was also the finest white soul singer of her era, a performer of remarkable emotional resonance whose body of work spans the decades and their attendant musical transformations with a consistency and purity unmatched by any of her contemporaries; though a camp icon of glamorous excess in her towering beehive hairdo and panda-eye black mascara, the sultry intimacy and heartbreaking urgency of Springfield's voice transcended image and fashion, embracing...
