Album Review

Guitarist/vocalist Ted Hawkins was an instant sensation when this session was originally released in 1982. At a time when slick, heavily produced urban contemporary material was establishing its domination on the R&B scene, Hawkins' hard-edged, rough, cutting voice, plus his crisp acoustic guitar accompaniment and country-blues roots, seemed both dated and extremely fresh. This 15-track CD includes four numbers with Hawkins backed by Phillip Walker and his band, and others ranging from the humorous "Who Got My Natural Comb?" to the poignant "If You Love Me" and two versions of the title track. He also teamed with his wife Elizabeth on "Don't Lose Your Cool" and "I Gave It All I Had" for moving duets.

This album was first played to me by my Grandad when I was 9yrs old back in 86' I believe & it had an effect on me even then. 2 years later my beloved Grandad passed away & I was left with his music collection, all on cassettes! This was in there & I played it a lot during that year. Unfortunately that cassette got "chewed up" & was therefore no good but thanks to to itunes a couple of years back I managed to listen to this amazing album again. For those of you who love pure music then please download this album. Ted's voice is so unique & his lyrics very touching & true to life. There isnt a bad song on here, every single track is magic. I could go on forever about it but I wont, trust me when I say this will be one of the best few ££ you will spend on music.

Just amazing

I was first introduced to this album in 1988 by a friend. I soon went out and bought a copy on Tape! and listened to it often. I loved the natural feel and simple but perfect arrangement and of course His voice which seems to touch your soul directly. Sadly I had all of my tape music collection stolen by Burglars in 1992 and I had not heard this album until now on Itunes. Amazed it's here and I've a new chance to enjoy Ted. It's a wonderful album which always brings me sunshine. God bless you Ted and thanks ITunes.

Overseas, he was a genuine hero, performing for thousands. But on his L.A. home turf, sand-blown Venice Beach served as Ted Hawkins' makeshift stage. He'd deliver his magnificent melange of soul, blues, folk, gospel, and a touch of country all by his lonesome, with only an acoustic guitar for company. Passersby would pause to marvel at Hawkins' melismatic vocals, dropping a few coins or a greenback into his tip jar. That was the way Ted Hawkins kept body and soul together until 1994, when DGC/Geffen...
