What a great album!

I dont think I ever really knew how good this album was, it is very uplifting and reminds me of being in the car with my dad because he always used to play this album. Feel happy, uplifted, emotional, and good with this album.

Brothers you wish you had!

this is not hip, it is not cool, it is simply the best pop rock album of all time - it's in 25 million people's CD library - add it to yours asap. The top song is why worry? the pick of the album - wonderful atmosphere - guitar that is haunting! Mark Knopfler we salute you!

An Iconic Rock Album

This album is an Icon of the 80's, whether it was the birth of the CD as a recorded medium that created it's success, or just the sheer quality of the songs performed by a band at the height of their powers we will never know. The album was the must have album of the 80's. In a decade which was short on guitar heros, the title track spawned a thousand guitarists, with it's brooding intro. Throughout the album Mark Knopflers guitar playing is beautifully restrained and soulful, this album was his tour de force. This is a great example to all guitarists that it's as much about the space you leave in a song as flurry of notes you throw down. Money for Nothing was an anthem at the time, it received so much airplay you could have been forgiven for disliking it .. looking back though, it's a classic, as are So Far Away, Your Latest Trick, Walk of Life .. so many great songs. There are glimpses of Knopflers future direction with The Mans Too Strong. Anyone who remembers Live Aid, will remember the stunning performance they put in that day, playing several of the songs from the album .. on the day they were second only to Queen, who were suitably majestic ! This is simply a great album.

Formed: 1977 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s

Dire Straits emerged during the post-punk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. If anything, the band was a direct outgrowth of the roots revivalism of pub rock, but where pub rock celebrated good times, Dire Straits were melancholy. Led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler, the group built their sound upon the laid-back blues-rock of J.J. Cale, but they also had jazz and country inflections, occasionally dipping into the epic song...
