Album Review

Arsenio Rodriguez y Su Conjunto unwrap and reveal their beauty slowly, with graceful patience. The true father of the conjunto style, Rodriguez's arrangements are elegant and unassuming, gently supporting every well-crafted song. The lush beauty of the vocals throughout this record make it a pleasurable and easy listen. On "Buenavista en Guaguanco," Arsenio delivers the full and passionate tone of an experienced sonero, something markedly missing from much of today's salsa. One is also quickly reminded that though a master of many instruments, Rodriguez left a mark in history through his use of the guitar-like tres. With both solid accompaniment and deft solos like those on "Mami Me Gusto," it's easy to see why. One is left to wonder why such a prolific writer would record an album with less than half of the repertoire to his credit. While this remains a bit of a mystery, what is clear is how he developed the reputation for being the Cuban songwriter of his generation. Be it for the bittersweet harmony of "Adorenla Como a Marti" or the irresistibly singable "El Homenaje Esta Hablando Bien," his pervasive influence on future generations is undeniable. Though exploring the history of the music that one loves can sometimes be made laborious by poor recording and performance quality, the imminently listenable Sabroso y Caliente proves to be a heartwarming and enthralling journey. ~ Evan C. He is considered the father of the conjunto, an instrumental format that was revolutionary for its time because it introduced the conga drum, which had previously been considered taboo because of its...
