Shared reliance on observation, storytelling and wit makes comedy and hip-hop kindred spirits. Stand-up/actor/writer Donald Glover proves as much on a studio debut full of imagination and satisfying wordplay. The self-belief and synth-driven melodics of “Fire Fly” and “All the Shine” suggest a less-intense Kanye West, but where Kanye would channel a bruised ego and heartbreak into a sprawling rant, Glover’s pathos turns them into absorbingly sympathetic closer “That Power”.
