Very Schocked...

I first heard Michelle Shocked via a live radio broadcast some years ago. In that setting, the folky, tongue-in-cheek style had a bouncy groove factor that was impossible to aviod being drawn into. Since then, I've been trying to get hold of that session. Captain Swing contains many of the songs sung on that occasion; hence my download. Unfortunately, it's as if someone sifted out all of the magic. Displaying all of the worst virtues of digital media, this harsh and clinical recording is not an enjoyable listen. Instruments sound like a 1980's synth-fest; many of the brass-bursts would be more at home on a fruit machine. Michelles accomplished and vivacious vocals not withstanding, the poor recording and lack-lustre arrangement severely tarnish some real musical gems.

Great!

One of my favorite albums - ever. Had (almost) forgotten how great it was until I downloaded it again after not having heard it for a while.
