Editors’ Notes

Vanessa Carlton has dispatched her many helpers, writing most of the songs herself and accompanying herself on piano. The musical expanse of “I Don’t Want To Be a Bride”, co-written with Ari Ingber and Steve Osbourne, is a moment when Carlton comes near pure pop but even there it’s tempered with a level of personal introspection more in tune with herself than the pop world. The subliminal and ethereal push of “Hear the Bells” is so evocative and effective that one wishes it were twice as long. “Dear California”, the album’s other co-write with Ingber, is a driving acoustic-guitar composition where Carlton comes close to Liz Phair’s compact early pop. “Tall Tales for Spring” has the angular rhythms of Fiona Apple and Tori Amos, but with a sweetness unique to Carlton. “Get Good” is a striking ballad, highlighted by a wonderfully double-tracked vocal. “In the End” settles things with another beautifully ethereal piece. The Deluxe Edition of the album offers greater insights, featuring three live tracks that, while “acoustic”, are still ornately arranged, and three videos that allow the listener to see what Carlton has been up to.

Along with Michelle Branch and Nelly Furtado, Vanessa Carlton helped usher in a new era of female songwriters during the early 2000s. "A Thousand Miles," her first single, was one of the biggest songs of 2002, topping the pop charts in America and cracking the Top Ten in England. None of her subsequent singles came close to matching that song's success, but Carlton continued releasing albums into the following decade, fine-tuning a sweeping, cinematic pop sound that featured her vocals and piano...
