iTunes Review

Around the Well is a collection of “rarities” from Iron & Wine: outtakes, B-sides, soundtrack cuts, demos. Considering the low profile of the “band” in question (really singer-songwriter Sam Beam with whomever he chooses to collaborate), it’s merely a handy-dandy assembly of stray tracks that loyal fans will want in order to complete their collection. Everything that makes Beam such an attractive performer is here. The soft, whispered vocals, the impeccable finger-picked acoustics, the thoughtful enigmatic lyrics, the laidback, chilling melodies all coalesce into a formidable whole. If these are “leftovers,” then Beam is one solid, prolific songwriter. Covers of the Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights” (featured in the film Garden State) and the Flaming Lips’ “Waitin’ for a Superman” add to the intrigue factor. The 23 tracks begin with mostly quiet, unadorned acoustic tunes (“Loud As Hope” is simply gorgeous) with slide guitar and hushed arrangements, eventually expanding into fuller band excursions such as “Kingdom of the Animals” where piano and electric slide spike the punch.

Around the Well - Iron & Wine 2009

Having been a huge fan of Iron & Wine for many years, the expectation for the recent album, in my view, was high. Their recent success with the song 'Flightless Bird, American Mouth' in the film Twilight, massively boosted their fan base and I am glad that finally Iron & Wine are getting the appreciation they deserve. In this album, the lyrics are just as poetic as ever and the instrumental background is just as beautiful and peaceful as it was promised to be. The song 'Love Vigilantes’ proves to be one of the bands best so far as it captures in beautiful language the story of one solider, which reflects many peoples stories in today’s current climate. The album gives of a surreal, calming atmosphere, transporting the listener into a rustic world of their own creation. This album proves to be the best so far and I, along with many fans, am eager to see what the future holds for Iron & Wine.

awesome!

excellent album! it seriuosly makes you dream awake. you MUST listen Swans and the swimming

An absolute gem of an album...BUY IT!

Collecting songs ranging from out-of-print to never before released, this record spans Iron and Wine’s earliest sessions which yielded Sam Beam's debut (2002’s The Creek Drank the Cradle) through to material recorded for 2007’s The Shepherd’s Dog. Around the Well is broken up into two sections. The first half is an assortment of hushed lo-fi home recordings, unedited and raw, and the second highlights moments captured in the confines of proper studios with the help of other musicians, friends and engineers. A must have for any fan of hushed bedroom folk.
