Customer Reviews

this is only my rating so far.

I'm basically putting what I think will end up happening with a lot of people who have listened to their last three albums. a lot of people will be confused after the first listen. Where is the power pop we all came to know and love? What happened to the happy demented songs like Mystery Hours and Use It? every time I listen to it, I like the songs more and more. Myriad Harbour, My Rights Versus Yours and Failsafe have taken a stranglehold on a certain part of my brain and I have to keep playing those songs. so far, I'd give it about 7/10, leaning more towards 4 stars than 3. I just know that I'm going to like it a lot more this time next week and it will start to get a lot of 5 star ratings from people who weren't sure at first. To those who have never heard the New Pornographers, this isn't the best album to start with as it's definitely not the most immediate of the three predecessors, and the tempo of the music is completely different this time around. if you're a big fan, get it. if you're not, get Mass Romantic or Twin Cinema first

Great Album

this album is just awesome in my opinion, even though is does not have a lot of variety, the formula is very good. Arcade Fire is bot the only good band from Canada

Love their latest style

Another reviewer here was spot-on when predicting the confused response from those who were expecting more of the power-ballad stuff that preceded, but I'm one who really didn't like their style, until now. I've come round to them in very much the same way as appreciating Belle & Sebastian when they released The Life Pursuit (although the New Pornographers haven't exhibited such a dramatic shift), and very much like this album. 'Failsafe' is the highlight, and as good as Rock gets nowadays.

The Vancouver indie rock supergroup the New Pornographers feature the talents of Zumpano's Carl Newman, the Evaporators' John Collins, Destroyer's Dan Bejar, cartoonist/filmmaker Blaine Thurier, drummer Fisher Rose, and guest vocalist Neko Case. Newman began the band in 1996 as a lark after releasing Zumpano's Goin' Through Changes; one by one, the other members joined the fold, and the New Pornographers' first official rehearsal took place in 1997. By the following year, the group had completed...
