Album of the year?

The hotly anticipated new album from James, their first new material for 7 years does not disappoint. It shows them confidently back on form with their best material since Laid. Benefitting from the return of guitarist Larry Gott and trumpet genius Andy Diagram, the album is breathtakingly beautiful, a glorious soundscape to lose yourself in. Tim Booth's lyrics are compellingly good, and have never sounded more stunning than here. From the mantra to creation that is Bubbles, the anger of Hey Ma and 72, the classically James explosion of sound that is Waterfall and the poetic imagery of Monsters Heroes and Men, this is a band not only at the top of their game, but way ahead of the competition.

Simply Stunning, An Excellent Return to Form.

The title says it all really. Some of James best tracks are on this album which is an amazing effort for a band trying to reunite. In one hand, it's still the same james that has been rocking for years and on the other the album breaks into new ground.

Comeback of comebacks

James never officially split though they stayed away for six or sevens years, so to label this a comeback album is probably incorrect, certainly to the pedant. 2007 saw a fashion sprung of reformations, the less glamorous James actually blazed the trail, quietly quietly, hardly anyone but their fans knew. Here they are 12 months on with a new studio album, no departures, no reinventions, and why should they. The same tried and trusted poetry, anthemic and soaring tunes are welcome, it has been too long an absence. Upside a song about migrant workers having to leave their families behind to forge a living is surely a single and one of the best James tracks ever, that in itself is some proclamation. Waterfall will have the converted masses writhing around in a Boothesque flurry when the small venues tour starts this week and Bubbles will slowly but slowly pull you in, before you know it you'll be absorbed and reaching for the repeat button. Album title track Hey Ma is a rare James protest tune, it's moving and has those shimmering moments that move to tears, just listen to the sentiments!

Formed: 1982 in Manchester, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

As one of the first groups to be dubbed "the next Smiths," James became an institution on the British alternative music scene during the '80s and '90s with their pleasant folk-pop. Early in their career, James were praised by their idol Morrissey, which turned out to be both a blessing and a curse. The group was pegged as second-rate Smiths, yet continued to tour and record, eventually gaining a sizable following. In the late '80s, James, like many of their British peers, became involved in the acid...
