iTunes Review

This mammoth collection of cuts from 1955 to 1961 plays out like a private conversation between two jazz titans talking in their own harmonic language. On songs like the melancholic "'Round Midnight", Davis makes restrained and delicately phrased statements with his muted trumpet, while Coltrane blows through the feisty "Two Bass Hit" with his trademark intense expressive lyricism. This contrasting exploration of shared musical space comes to define the recordings, climaxing bewitchingly on the modal jazz cornerstone "So What".

Great music, beware the price

One of the great collections of 20th century music - including Kind of Blue, Milestones and a lot more - but since Sony have just re-released the boxed set in less elaborate packaging for less than half the price of this download, iTunes needs to catch itself on. Caveat emptor.

The Complete Columbia Recordings - Miles Davis & John Coltrane

What can you say except come sit at the feet of Gods and just marvel!
This is just amazing stuff. Two of Jazz lagends at their best. I bought this set originally as the CD-box and it is well worth having.
Such amazing recordings.
The one thing I don't like about this box set is that these are not the individual albums but who cares when it's music of this calibre.
The one thing I don't like about this compilation in iTunes is that you don't get to read the really informative liner notes.
This is true of course for all iTunes purchases but it would be nice if they could include something about these historic recordings.
Aside from that, this is brilliant music.
Buy it - you wont be disapointed.

Throughout a professional career lasting 50 years, Miles Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective, and melodic style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. But if his approach to his instrument was constant, his approach to jazz was dazzlingly protean. To examine his career is to examine the history of jazz from the mid-'40s to the early '90s, since he was in the thick of almost every important innovation and stylistic development in the...
