Album Review

With his coarse, Sam Cooke-like voice and his lovable bantam rooster stage presence, Rod Stewart has had a long and steady career full of classic tracks, most of them in a folksy blues-rock vein, but that iconic husky voice is an adaptable one, and Stewart tackled the Great American Songbook for four albums, all of which are combined here in a digital download playlist. Almost everything is a ballad so listeners looking for “Hot Legs” dance-type songs will be at a loss, but hearing Stewart wrap his voice around standards is a treat more often than not.

Rod - The Man, The Legend !

What great value from iTunes for a change :o) All 55 tracks from the American Songbook series in one place for a very reasonable £8.99. Even despite a few dud tracks here and there, it is a decent deal. Thanks !

Rod Steward Complete American Songbook

I have no 'history' with Rod Stewart. Not really heard him before he did these songs, almost all of which I know well from the other familiar artists. All I can say is he knows how to swing, he has a distinctive voice which means he's clearly not imitating anyone else, he sings the songs in a high key for a man, which adds to the distinctive nature of his performance. He's impeccably in tune, the phrasing's that of someone who really knows how to do the songs. The arrangements are very straight, but very professional and satisfying, and the backing singers add just the right touch. There are other details, too - it's good to hear the verse of many of the songs. done nicely in free time, and he (or someone) has gone to the original lyric, as with "Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered" which for years has been done in a bowdlerised form. What's not to like?

Rod-go back to the Faces!!

I love the old Rod music from the 70s- when I watch the old videos it's obvious he's wasted on all these old covers. Bring back the old Rod!!!

Over the course of his career, Rod Stewart has had it all. He's been lauded as the finest singer of his generation, he's written several songs that turned into modern standards, he sang with the Faces, who rivaled the Rolling Stones in their prime, he had massive commercial success. Stewart also saw his critical respect slip away during the '80s, when he recorded lightweight pop and although he did record some terrible albums — and he would admit that freely — Stewart will always be remembered...
