Album Review

Supertramp came into their own on their third album, 1974's Crime of the Century, as their lineup gelled but, more importantly, so did their sound. The group still betrayed a heavy Pink Floyd influence, particularly in its expansive art rock arrangements graced by saxophones, but Supertramp isn't nearly as spooky as Floyd — they're snarky collegiate elitists, an art rock variation on Steely Dan or perhaps a less difficult 10cc, filled with cutting jokes and allusions, best heard on "Bloody Well Right." This streak would later flourish on Breakfast in America, but it's present enough to give them their own character. Also present is a slight sentimental streak and a heavy fondness for pop, heard on "Dreamer," a soaring piece of art pop that became their first big hit. That and "Bloody Well Right" are the concise pop moments on the record; the rest of Crime of the Century is atmospheric like Dark Side of the Moon, but with a lighter feel and a Beatles bent. At times the album floats off into its own world, with an effect more tedious than hypnotic, but it's still a huge leap forward for the group and their most consistent album outside of that 1979 masterwork, Breakfast in America.

Excellence.

Quite simply Supertramps finest album as a whole piece of work. Breakfast in America has the best singles but Crime of the Century is the best album. Opening and closing on very structurely and musically unconventional numbers that strengthen the albums journey-like qualities; School and Crime of the Century are two of the finest progressive rock songs ever written. The two famous singles Dreamer and Bloody Well Right are catchy and infectious and Asylum is actually quite funny! The rest of the songs are just as strong and to invest in only one or two of these songs would be pointless. The album as a whole is the way to go. Great cover too.

Give it some respect

Anyone who slags Supertramp has obviously never listened to this album. I am not a huge Supertramp Fan but this album is fantastic. If played loud over big speakers it rocks but alternatively stick on your headphones for a bit of post gig/club chill and get lost in its ambience. Dont let the post punk music snobs ruin your fun just give it a try.I have been listening to this album for 22 years and never get tired of it

Time for Resurrection

'The actors and jestors are here...' as the hairy ones wrote in the sublime 'If Everyone Was Listening'. They must have been refering to the latter day fashion police who hate Supertramp but seem to be satisfied with the mindless variations of three blind mice that constitute 90% of current pop music. You see, my old man always liked a nice tune and now that I am my father I can finally and unashamedly agree. Even so, this album is so much more than melody. It may be a little bit sixth former has spots and is angry with everything but these sixth form renegades have wit, musical ability and not a little grand theatricality about them. No dodgy lettuce filler within the meaty innards of this '70s sandwich. Tuck in. Go on. You don't have to admit it to your friends.
