Album Review

For their third album, Swedish prog metal stalwarts Cult of Luna added a seventh member, Anders Teglund, a second keyboardist who concentrates on samples and effects. Teglund largely keeps to the background for most of Salvation, however. Don't worry, they haven't turned into Skinny Puppy or anything. Indeed, Salvation is perhaps Cult of Luna's most accomplished and strongest album yet. The sense of dynamics that's been the band's strong suit all along is on full display here, with most of these eight lengthy songs (none under five minutes, and half over ten) featuring long passages of sparse, quiet music that at times are genuinely rather pretty. The near-ambient opening section of "Echoes" might even remind listeners of the Pink Floyd epic of the same title, and the closing track, "Into the Beyond," has a fluid, bass-led section that recalls some of Can's later work. These moments of musical respite only increase the power of the full-on metal onslaughts when they come in. Where many similar albums become numbing after a while, Salvation is strong without being bludgeoning.

pure class!

this album is brilliant! right from the first track, Sweden''s Cult Of Luna take you on an epic journey leaving you breathless & astonished by the end of this album. "Echoes" "Leave Me Here" "Adrift" & "Into The Beyond" are personal faves. amazing under-rated band with amazing under-rated songs.

If you like Isis you will love Cult Of Luna. Salvation is very epic heavy doom metal, and I realy like the slow molodic bits in to the hard head banging rifs. GOOD STUFF!

undeniably perfect.

This was the first album of theirs that I ever heard. I initially heard the track leave me here, which led to me buying the album. Now 8 years later, this album is still easily one of my most played albums. every track is solid gold.

Formed: Umea, Sweden

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Formed from the remnants of a hardcore band named Eclipse in the far-northern Swedish town of Umeå (also home to avant-hardcore masters Refused and metal extremists Meshuggah and Naglfar), Cult of Luna have perfected an elaborate, extremely dark progressive style of metalcore largely derived from the pioneering work of America's Neurosis. Although hardly the only band to find inspiration in the Bay Area bunch (Isis and Rwake also numbering among their disciples), Cult of Luna are unquestionably among...
