Crossover into space with Sunahara and Sandii

Yoshinori Sunahara is one third of Japanese techno-band Denki Groove. While Denki Groove "live fast and fly high (180 BPM)", Sunahara's solo work tends to be more relaxed and soulful. I was turned on to this album when I heard the Hawaiian-Japanese diva Sandii (ex- Sandii & The Sunsetz, plus Yellow Magic Orchestra and David Sylvian collaborator) made a guest appearance on a cover of the Rah Band's "Clouds Across The Moon". I was not disappointed - it is a dreamy, spacy take on the track with a kicking beat and elegant vocals from Sandii. This album reminds me of some of Towa Tei and Pizzicato Five's best work; mixing genres of Japanese and western sounds to create new hybrids. There are also nods to electronic pioneers Yellow Magic Orchestra and Kraftwerk, particularly on "The Long Vowel" and 'Muddy Water" which is Sunahara's "Tanzmusik" (Kraftwerk) or "Neue Tanz" (YMO).
