Champion DJ Steve Aoki finally releases his debut album following years of running Dim Mak Records, promoting clubs, producing records, and spinning discs at A-list celebrity parties in L.A. Wonderland is thoroughly enjoyable crossover dance pop from start to finish, boasting an impressive cast of cameos from the opening cut. The infectiously groovy “Earthquakey People” not only features Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo—it has him rapping. The most salient song here has to be “Livin’ My Love”, a bubbling electro-hop hit graced by the presence of LMFAO and Nervo. Kid Cudi and Travis Barker appear on the slightly spacy “Cudi the Kid”. Unsurprisingly, will.i.am sounds like he’s having the most fun as his alter-ego Zuper Blahq drops hilarious rhymes masked in Auto-Tuned vocal distortion. And just when you think things couldn’t get any sillier, Sick Boy teams up with former members of The Exploited and Die Kreuzen for the industrial/punk-tinged “The Kids Will Have Their Say”. Of the three bonus tracks, “No Beef” is the standout thanks to soulful singing by Miss Palmer.
Very experimental album
Steve Aoki may not look like your average DJ but what he's done with this album, and his songs, seems to show many different sides to dance music and taking it to further levels in some cases. There's the typical upbeat party anthems such as Earthquakey People, Dangerous, and Livin' My Love (which is the best track in my opinion). But at the end there's also signs that people who like other genres, such as metal, may like the sound of. For example, on The Kids Will Have Their Say, the lead vocals here are likely to be heard at rock festivals, so to add them into dance music is a witty but very cunning move indeed. Which is always good as I really like newer and fresher ideas in music. And with a top list of collaborations as well, from LMFAO, Wynter Gordon, Rivers Cuomo of Weezer, Chiddy Bang, Kid Cudi, Travis Barker and more, this is something else that makes the experimentation count. Great work, Steve Aoki.
