'Broken English' in soft focus

Out with the new wave, in with the old disco. Critics weren't kind to Faithfull's follow-up to 'Broken English', and you can't really blame them. Underpinning many of the songs is the spectre of 80s dance/disco, giving them a funkier feel, but whitewashing some of the lyrical bitterness. The production too has far more sheen, blunting much of the savageness that is still lurking under the surface; and the worst songs sound rushed, thrown together by disinterested dope-heads to make a fast buck. Despite all that, the best songs here ('Intrigue', 'So Sad' and 'Truth, Bitter Truth') are as honest and emotionally affecting as anything off 'Broken English', and a damn sight easier on the psyche. Lesser but lighter - and you can dance to it!
