iTunes Review

In the time that’s passed since 2007’s Christmas-themed And Winter Came, Enya’s influence has made itself heard in a new generation of female artists—from Julia Holter’s classically informed art-pop to the hallucinogenic melodies of Grimes. On Dark Sky Island, the new age icon returns with a set of lush, synth-lined reveries as melodic and mesmeric as anything she’s recorded since her strangely ubiquitous 1988 debut, Watermark. While its gorgeous title track is layered with her singular brand of yawning vocal harmonies and gossamer strings, “The Loxian Gate” is an anthem sung in Loxian—a fictional language invented just for her.

Ethereal, Novel, Yearning, Adventurous

Enya has returned with her ethereal melodies and remained true to her sound: not confirming to the demands of the music industry. I’m guilty of fearing that this album would be more of the same, which I would have liked, but I was yearning for something outstandingly unique. I never should have doubted her - Enya has created an album that sounds like the very stars are singing to you.

Each song tells a beautiful and mysterious story but the album (unlike previous ones) blends into one grand starry orchestra. I’m transported into a whole different world: one filled with peace, love and enchantment. Once again Enya gives me chills up my spine.

I never thought she could top A Day Without Rain or Shepherd Moons (my two favourites) but this is my favourite album by her so far.

An ethereal masterpiece.. Back at her best!

The grand mistress of layered harmonies and ethereal vocal sweeps is back!..Undeniably Enya but with some subtle, fresh tweaks here and there it's like hearing a familiar knock at an old oak door on a winter's night, but on looking through the frosted glass panel the silhouette has a greater depth.. You open the door to find a comforting friend there quickly enveloping your reeling senses beneath her cape with a golden radiance, that exquisite voice, a whispered aural fragrance of Mother Nature's finest Celtic panoramas. And yet before you know it you are betwixt by a brooding mist to a leaden sky..a jewel of an album. I thank the music gods for Enya.

Sounds of the past mixed with a new freshness. Judging by the short clips, it seems well worth the wait.

With her blend of folk melodies, synthesized backdrops, and classical motifs, Enya created a distinctive style that more closely resembled new age than the folk and Celtic music that provided her initial influences. Enya is from Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland, which she left in 1980 to join the Irish band Clannad, the group that already featured her older brothers and sisters. She stayed with Clannad for two years, then left, hooking up with producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan, with whom...
