Album Review

Released to acclaim after Euronymous' death, this is the most readily available Mayhem album in America. The music is fast and furious, and the stomach-turning vocals are unintelligible, but Mayhem avoids being simply standard by making subtle changes in their sound throughout the album and not falling into a rut or repeating themselves, as too many other black metal bands tend to do. This album may require a bit of patience, but it is worth it.

Classic Black Metal

Not death metal, as the iTunes review suggests. Worth a listen just to experience the work of one of the defining acts of black metal's second wave, but this is a great album in its own right.

Declaration of War

Attila's vocals are very controversial. However, the voice of the mad monk - Attila's operatic singing/wailing - on the title track is not only atmospheric but superior to the standard vocals which would have been provided by Dead. Sometimes though, the growls are laughably melodramatic and the screams simply very feeble.

The background to the album's production further adds to the evil which imbues De Mysteriis, especially the fact that victim and murderer are performing together. But the atrocities committed by band members should not detract from the quality of the music - in particular, I refer to the riffs on Funeral Fog and the blast beats on Buried by Time and Dust.

great songs but

you cant really take anything seriously as the vocals are so terrible. get "live in leipzig" for the first and last word on mayhem.

Drummer Hellhammer, who at one time worked in a mental hospital, is the only remaining member of the band's prime-period lineup. Lead vocalist Dead committed...
