Back in a big way

I only got this album three days ago and have listened to it five times already: it just keeps getting better. Some are saying that this is the best Candlemass album since the legendary 'Nightfall' and I'm certainly inclined to agree. I've always been a huge Candlemass fan but some periods of their career have been a little disapointing. But this era of Candlemass is far from that and is in fact one of their greatest moments. They aren't the kind of band where the listener wants things to change too much so the fact that they stick to their traditional sound is one of the album's key strengths. Another is Robert Lowe's stunning vocals. Some are going to miss Messiah's vocals, but, as great as he is, I think it is time to accept that he's never coming back. Candlemass are about Lowe's vocals now, and he does an amazing job. His voice is almost supernaturally powerful and suits the band perfectly. I'm also a massive fan of Solitude Aeturnus so for me it is like two of my favourite bands coming together to create the ultimate doom band, with the ultimate album to back them up.
The songs here are another strength: they are some of the most well crafted and instant Candlemass songs for years, with the perfect balance of heaviness and gothic melody. Some highlights for me are: 'Hammer of Doom', 'Demon of the Deep' and 'My Funeral Dreams', but all are truly great. If you're a fan of either Candlemass or Solitude then get this album, no hesitation. It's a true return to previous greatness. Those new to these bands will find a great place to start here. Doom metal is all about melody, atmosphere and oppressive heaviness, and this album has all these things in abundance.

Sweden's Candlemass helped reintroduce the lumbering power chords of Black Sabbath to an entire generation of post-New Wave of British Heavy Metal and post-thrash metalheads, almost single-handedly writing the handbook for the modern doom metal movement in the process. After the breakup of his first band, Nemesis, in 1985, bassist Leif Edling founded Candlemass with vocalist Johan Lanquist, guitarist Mats Bjorkman, and drummer Matz Ekstroem. Their watershed debut, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, was...
