Tyler's growled vocals were his trademark, but otherwise he trod similar ground as Ernest Tubb. This CD collects 18 recordings made for the 4 Star label between 1945 and 1954, including seven Top Ten C&W hits, two of which are recitations (the oft-covered Deck of Cards and the groan-inducing Dad Gave My Dog Away). It's too bad Collectors' Choice didn't cross-license Bumming Around, his one Top 40 C&W entry for the Decca label, but otherwise this disc is a perfect collection of Tyler's most important recordings. The sound quality is sometimes rough, but The Best of T. Texas Tyler is a welcome anthology of this nearly forgotten artist.

Charismatic singer/songwriter T. Texas Tyler was a successful figure from the late '40s through the mid-'50s, often credited with helping to popularize the sentimental country "recitation" -- a storytelling composition partly or completely spoken by the performer -- with his massive 1948 hit "Deck of Cards." He was born David Luke Myrick in Mena, AR, and from childhood aspired to become a country performer. As a young man, Tyler moved to Rhode Island to live with his brother, who was stationed there...
