On his third full-length, the superstar shows the full wealth and range of his powers. ÷ is a ruthlessly melodic run through a staggering array of styles, further proof that Sheeran is a singer/songwriter for these musical times: a balladeer who can blur the lines between Celtic folk and hip-hop (“Galway Girl”) just as readily as he can summon big, festival-ready sentiments (“Castle on the Hill”), impassioned serenades (“Perfect”) and pulse-quickening pop (“Shape of You”).
If Castle on the Hill and Shape of You are anything to go by this will be gold.
The gentle melodic and vulnerable narrative of Ed Sheeran’s previous work seems to have been swapped for more rap and upbeat pop, with an appreciation for Irish twang and folksy ballads. His exploration of new a range of styles in this album, while certainly catchy, has lost some of the original Ed Sheeran DNA. The production is good, personal and solid. The lyrics are classic Sheeran but I would argue that this album needs a more thorough listening to than his previous works. There’s far more complexity at play here with angst and nostalgic references that mix with the melodies almost with a structured chaos. It’s not a far cry away from ‘+’ and ‘x’ and does work to open new ground for the singer/songwriter’ dynamism and talents.
Such Pretentious meh.
People love it though.
