Puzzled, And A Bit Disappointed

I put a glowing 5* review of this special edition in iTunes yesterday (I think this may overwrite that one though), but after spending most of Monday and this morning listening forensically to both the original and remastered versions (yes, I'm a saddo), I have to say that, even as someone who loves Incantations only slightly less than Ommadawn, I really can't tell much difference between the two versions.

Unlike the previous reissues - Ommadawn and Hergest Ridge - where you can easily distinguish where Mike has enhanced the mix by bringing some passages forward and pushing some passages back in order to create a different sound, there's very little on the Incantationbs reissue that I can recognise as different. Yes, it's a bit crisper and'shinier' in places, but there's no radical reworking of the music here.

Also, there's a fault on Part 4, at 12:37 where it skips. This is not only on the iTunes download but also on the actual CD (I originally bought the CD version, loaded it and heard the skip, reloaded it and found the same skip, then bought the iTunes version only to find the same fault). For such a perfectionist as Mike Oldfield, this is an unforgiveable oversight. In the old days, you got used to having your vinyl LPs skip and click, you even get it on some CDs, but for this to go out on a digital download is careless and smacks of complacency on Oldfield's production staff.

All in all, the music is excellent, I can't fault that, but unless I'm missing something basic here, I can't really see the point of the reissue as it's no different to the version I've already got (unless I've got cloth ears, an Oldfield in-joke)

Magical

Wow! One of the greatest albums of all time now available in a sensational new deluxe version. Along with 'Ommadawn', I think this is Mike's best work - so inventive and mesmerising. Great vocal from Maddy Prior too. I just can't praise this release too much - definitely one for my desert island!

Well Done Mikey!! by The Patster

Incantations is a very good album musically and sonically... With these Reissues which the man himself is heavily involved in, it's great to hear all of his work in 5.1 after all Mike Oldfield has created and influence Sound Production in many ways, this will become even more evident on Future releases..

One important Fact to point out: A previous reveiwer mention the 'Skip' on Part Four at around 12;37, Mike was Recently interviewed and spoke about this Reissue.. He spoke about some of the conditions the Original Master Tapes were in
Some kept in a very damp tape storage rooms suffering harsh winters and other incidents, Considering all of this He was still able to recover alot of information for this Reissue, hence the 'Tape Dropout' on that section.

As for the Album it was the last of the 'Longform pieces he composed before moving into new areas with Platinum
The 2nd disc features a No frills mix
of 'Guilty and new mixes of the key themes which are very good hear.. the Piano Improv is my favourite.. Enjoy It
