Album Review

To coincide with the electronica revolution of the late '90s, Bill Laswell remixed a number of Bob Marley records as ambient dub for the Dreams of Freedom: Ambient Translations of Bob Marley in Dub album. If these songs were remixed by any other producer, the results could have been disastrous, but Laswell is one of the masters of intellectual dub — he knows what to take out and what to add, creating a spacious, cavernous mix that is provocative without being extreme. Some longtime Marley fans will balk at the very idea of the album, but the results are undeniably impressive, even if it's a little too restrained and cerebral to qualify as first-rate ambient dub for clubs.

Customer Reviews

Not quite Bob.

It's not dreadful. However I don't feel that this captured the spirit of Bob Marley in any way. I think he'd be a little offended.

Dreams of Freedom

I think Bob Marley as a legend that was open to many different interpretations of music would have quite happily nodded his head along to this album. Deeply soulful and mind grabbing, Great album!

Marley In Dub Should Be Better Than This

Although it's not an awful record I feel that there are much better Marley Dub albums out there and this just does not sound like something Bob would have put out himself had he been around. For brilliant Marley dubs check out 'Songs Of Freedom Box Set' or 'Upsetter Revolution Rhythm' and go from there.
