The soundtrack to the 2011 thriller Drive was compiled and composed by Cliff Martinez. After drumming for The Dickies, Captain Beefheart, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers (among others), Martinez turned his focus to film scores. He’s since set music to a myriad of projects, including Pee Wee's Playhouse, Grey’s Anatomy, The Limey, and Solaris, to name a few. French DJ Vincent Belorgay (a.k.a. Kavinsky) sets the tone here with “Nightcall”, a sexy slice of perfect Parisian electro-pop in the vein of Air, Darkel, and Phoenix. The Chromatics’ “Tick of the Clock” manages to work in palpable tension within a minimal krautrock framework reminiscent of Neu! and Kraftwerk. Martinez’s own compositions sound similarly inspired by late-‘60s German experimental music, as well as Vangelis’ breakthrough 1982 score for Blade Runner. Check the icy synthesizer soundscapes of “Rubber Head”, where pulsing analog keyboard repetitions recall those of Popol Vuh. Ambient topographies are also explored in the Brian Eno-influenced “I Drive”.
Amazing but annoyed with iTunes for the best tracks being album only.
iTunes... why do you like to irritate your customers so much. An amazing album with amazing tracks but if you don't want to purchase the whole album, you miss out the best tracks... and so fewer people buy them. I hate being *forced* by corporate greed (either yours or the record company's) to part with my cash. It's exactly this sort of thing which encourages illegal file sharing. Ok rant over!
The best thing about an OST Is reliving the film through song, this is a great album for a 10/10 film and Refyn's best feature to date, with stand out performances from Gosling and Cranson. Contender for film of the year and an almost certain Oscar nom for Gosling, a film not to be missed with an accompanied album not to be missed. GET TO A CINEMA AND SEE IT! this album is just icing on a cake of such a great masterpiece of modern cinema.
One of the best films I have ever seen. Couldn't stop thinking about how good this soundtrack was all the way through. Soon as it finished I was looking it up! Amazing film, amazing soundtrack. Everyone should go and see it right now!
