What a band but this album does not reflect them well.

Art Damage was one of the most suprising, confident and inspirational albums i have ever come across. The build up to The Always Open Mouth promised the album to be a true bench mark of math-core metal but instead the experimentation on this album make it very hit-and-miss. Electronical influences and catcher choruses undo all the force contained in previous releases.

Experimental rock core!!!?

When I first heard this album I was gripped. There was and still is something about it that stops me from turning it off. Quite reminiscent of dillinger in their more melodic moments like "setting fire to sleeping giants" without the pace i guess. The songs vary widely and there is a clear electronic influence in the tracks. "My Deer Hunter", "Lycanthropy", "High as a Horse" and "Taking Cassandra..." are stand out tracks as is the visceral opening of "Drowning the Old Hag". This album is clever and whereas many recent albums are instant but have that quality that makes them dwindle away after a steady stint in the car cd player. This one is a grower and a keeper. I'm really impressed and look forwards to future releases. Well done to Fear Before... for creating an exciting album that challenges the listener.

Portland-area indie Rise Records took notice and issued the band's full-length debut, Odd How People Shake, in July 2003. Tours with types like the Blood Brothers and Hopesfall followed, and soon Equal Vision had snapped up Fear Before for its own...
