The Absolute Legend that is John 'The Don' Dillon

Like many Crimson fans, I was delighted to find this classic album available on iTunes, and having seen this band live several times back in their heyday, I could not wait to hear them again. And what a cast-iron classic it is. Listening back though, the thing that hits home is not the over-verbose violining of the aptly-monikered Cross, but the sheer poetic power of the chief songwriter, John 'The Don' Dillon. For it is his songs, and his intense, emotional delivery that lift the flatulent fiddling of his band member out of the stratosphere. For me, Nurse Insane is a particular triumph - did Fripp ever hit such heights? - but it seems unfair to single out one track. For example, check the feral ferocity of 'Black Ice', the plaintive peaen to post-industrial poverty that is 'Christine', or just the way 'Grinfixer' makes you smile...lobsidedly. Throughout the entire trip, it is chief lyricist, vocalist, and bassist John Dillon who carries it off. While Cross's style may sometimes resemble one more at home touching a wall than a human, after listening to Dillon's tour de force one can be left in no doubt about where he wants to touch you...slap bang between the eyes. And then some more. I'm going to stick it on again now. And so should you. Johnny Quadrio. What an absolute legend.
