pieces of eight

A project born from the 'Pirates of the Carribean' films -with Johnny Depp and director Gore Verinski press-ganging a motley crew of artists to perform a range of old sea chanteys and ballads they'd found in Davy Jones’ locker.

There’s not much light-hearted pugwash piracy here -many of the songs sound like someone is being keel-hauled at the same time- but there’s an integrity about the performances, a reverence for these forgotten songs, as though everyone understands that Hollywood might have glossed over the times with romance, but they have an obligation as musicians to preserve their heritage and keep this particular chapter as dark as the times undoubtably were. There’s a wealth of music and history here and they’ve no intention of re-writing it.

You can taste the salt on their lips and the stench from having been at sea for weeks on end, the relief at sighting land and the debauchery of the taverns they spend their time in before setting sail for more adventures.
What to do with a drunken sailor? It doesn’t bear thinking about.
