Etudes? Really, Philip?

If Mr Glass considers these "Etudes", he must be an awful pianist... I was able to play a couple of the pieces solely by ear. Once again, Glass overuses old ideas and expects everyone to be impressed with his extremely narrow minded view of music. Rocking major/minor triads, overly simplistic harmonies, no sense of structure or development, etc. Heck, he even manages to make polyrhythms look boring! The only reason this got two stars instead of one is because he has some interesting ideas (although didn't manage to sustain them long enough for it to be interesting) in Etudes nos. 1, 2 & 5. The rest is utter garbage in my eyes.

Flammesombre is right

I am just an average bod (cannot play the piano) and have nowhere near the breadth of experience that Flammesombre quite clearly has got.
The comments are accurate.
If you are a beginner and not aquainted with the works of Phillip Glass I would suggest just two sources to check out :

Glassworks (lots of 'classical' styles/ideas )
Heroes redone with David Bowie ('heavy pop' style remixed/reworked produced by Aphex Twin)

As for Mr Glass:

I find him 'samely' but he has flashes of (genius?) really interesting ideas, music that haunts and lingers.
For me, the samey issue is not a problem - because I find most repetative styles e.g. the blues, reggae - are the same stuff but done in an interesting, new and different way.

Beautiful but with dull moments

About five of these pieces are wonderful and five are somewhere between marginally interesting and rather dull. But worth getting for the good bits.

Philip Glass was unquestionably among the most innovative and influential composers of the 20th century. Postmodern music's most celebrated and high-profile proponent, his myriad orchestral works, operas, film scores, and dance pieces proved essential to the development of ambient and new age sounds, and his fusions of Western and world musics were among the earliest and most successful global experiments of their kind. Born in Baltimore, MD, on January 31, 1937, Glass took up the flute at the...
