Album Review

This audiophile CD reissue brings back one of the Manhattan Transfer's more popular sets. Their hit version of "Birdland" opens the program, and among the other tunes are "Twilight Tone" and "Trickle Trickle." From the jazz standpoint, the most significant numbers are the catchy "Birdland," "Wacky Dust," Spyro Gyra's "Shaker Song" and "Body and Soul." Although not exclusively in the idiom, this release has enough high points so as to be easily recommended to jazz collectors.

The Greatest Vocal Band of the latter 20th Century...

Why? Because they were/are never afraid to try ANYTHING! Extensions was one of the very first of their albums I ever owned, and trust me - every song on it is excellent. I'm so glad that I discovered Manhattan Transfer at a young age. This group proved instrumental in my appreciation of a wide range of music styles. Listening to their albums gave me a 'taster' of so many different musical and singing styles... Take a good look at all their albums; they seem to cover almost every genre - ranging from a 20's charleston sound, through 40's jazz and be-bop, to the 60's Motown groove, 70's 80's AND 90's pop, rock, jazz, blues, French chanson, Gospel, Brazilian samba sounds... Is there anything this group cannot do? Are they afraid of nothing? I really love their music, and I love the fact that they are brave enough and musically gifted enough to try just about anything that takes their fancy. I especially love the fact that whatever songs they sing the result is always one of absolute excellence! How many groups can you say about that nowadays?

Pure Vocal Excellence

There is something that is timeless about Manhattan Transfer. I have just started listening to this album again and it is still so fresh. I would have loved to have heard them in concert.

Riding a wave of nostalgia in the '70s, the Manhattan Transfer resurrected jazz trends from boogie-woogie to bop to vocalese in a slick, slightly commercial setting that balanced the group's close harmonies. Originally formed in 1969, the quartet recorded several albums of jazz standards as well as much material closer to R&B/pop. Still, they were easily the most popular jazz...
