Customer Reviews

Fantastic music, bargain price

If you've never heard any of RVW's music, this collection of his symphonies is an opportunity not to be missed. From the massive grow-on-you sound of the Sea Symphony to the drama of the sixth, all the emotions are catered for. Apart from those two, the other stand-out pieces are the second symphony (the second movement is gorgeous) and the fifth. The seventh (which is oncorrectly called the sixth here - it has five movements to help distinguish it) is based on music for 'Scott of the Antarctic'. Great interpretations of great music, plus The Lark Ascending and The Tallis Fantasia. Buy it!

An incredible bargain...

All his symphonies, the Job 'masque for dancing' and a wedge of orchestral music. The recorded sound is excellent. The price has increased since it first appeared on ITunes, but it is still a bargain. The performances aren't in the same league as Vernon Handley (first choice set) or Adrian Boult, but they are good. Very good. The drama is bought out with out histrionics and Davis shows a nice eye for detail without losing sight of the often complex structures. As noted elsewhere tracks 29 to 33 are actually the Seventh Symphony (which utilised music written for the film Scot of the Antartic.)

Just fantastic value

I am a big Vaughan-Williams fan, and this has all the greats in one place and at a fantastic price to boot. Grear recording - recommend
